ACT UP Shreveport was a grassroots activist group that fought for better healthcare, government accountability, and public awareness during the AIDS crisis in northwest Louisiana. Through protests, direct action, and advocacy, they challenged stigma and pushed for life-saving changes in hospitals and policies. Their work remains a powerful example of local activism in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and healthcare justice.

The Birth of The Philadelphia Center
Founded in response to the AIDS crisis, The Philadelphia Center in Shreveport became a vital resource for people living with HIV in northwest Louisiana. This POZ article explores how a small group of activists and healthcare workers came together to provide critical support, education, and advocacy in the face of stigma and fear.


Closet2Pride
Created by local filmmakers Robert Darrow and David Hylan, Closet2Pride explores the LGBTQ+ community’s journey in Shreveport, capturing both struggles and victories. Through powerful interviews, archival footage, and personal stories, the documentary highlights the challenges of coming out in a conservative environment and the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
